Detecting a Natural Gas Leak in Your Home

Gas leaks can be dangerous to a person’s health because carbon monoxide can cause serious health problems, even death. Therefore, it is important for a person to know if he or she has a gas leak in his or her home. If a person has a gas leak in his or her home there are generally warning signs, such as an odor.
Sometimes a person can smell the odor of natural gas; however, do not rely on the sense of smell. Sometimes a person’s sense of smell can be weakened by colds or other odors in the residence. Additionally, if there are new pipes in the residence or the leak is in an underground pipe, odor fade can cause the person not to smell the odor of natural gas. Therefore, if a person has a damaged or worn pipe to an appliance, do not rely on odor alone before calling for help. However, there are other signs there could be a gas leak in a residence.
If a person hears a hissing or whistling sound coming from around a gas pipe or from around a gas appliance, there could be a gas leak. Also, if a person notices his or her house plants dying this could be a sign of a gas leak. Additionally, if there is any trauma to the gas line, such as fire or any other kind of catastrophe, this could have damaged the gas line. However, safety during a gas leak is important.
The first thing a person needs to do is stay calm and level headed. Do not attempt to repair gas leaks on your own. Additionally, do not light matches, candles, or anything with a flame, and do not turn any type of electrical items on, such as lights. Leave the residence and call a qualified plumber in Houston or your utilities provider.
